Why the Peace Corps?

Since my first mission trip in 2011, I have wanted to live in another country for a long period of time. However, I did not know what that would look like. Would I go teach? Would I go as a missionary? Would I just move to another state? I have ponder these questions since 2011. In the summers of 2012 and 2013, I taught English in Ukraine and loved it.  I thought for sure thats where I would go. However, Ukraine is a lot of turmoil. So Ukraine is not an option. I hope and pray that one day I am able to return there.

In February 2014, I had to start thinking of what else could I do since Ukraine was not an option now. Then one night, I had this strong feeling that I would not be in Tampa next February. I started looking into different programs that night. Nothing I found stood out to me. So, I just left it alone. The very next day, I was talking with a good friend of mine at work and she said, "What about the Peace Corps?" She told me about her experience in the Peace Corps back in the 90's and it sounded just like what I want to do. However, I knew nothing about the Peace Corps. As soon as I got home, I started my research. After about an hour, I was hooked. I knew this is what I was supposed to do.

I want to follow Jesus and be His servant. I want to give up the American dream and help others. Teaching is my calling, and I know this is how God will use me. I want out of the politics and just teach. I want to live with the bare minimal. I want to see the world through my eyes not someone else's. I want to learn and live in another culture. I want to know what it is like to live in a community with no strings attached.

Peace Corps will fulfill all of these wants and needs. I know this will be hard and will stretch me to my limits but that is what I want. I believe with all of my heart this is where God wants me. He has opened all the doors for me and I am constantly looking to Him in this journey.

To make this journey even sweeter is all the support that I have received from my family and friends.  It amazes me that everyone believes that I can do this and I am so thankful for the support.

  2. Wow! Great blog post, Shannon! I have been so impressed with how God has molded you since I first met you. First, you take the plunge into Peace Corps, then skydiving, and now blogging! And you never left Florida until age 19? Fascinating!
